Bio

Smoky Soul Barbecue, founded by Chicago native Daniel Hammond, is more than just smoked meats—it’s a cultural movement. Blending his roots as an artist, educator, and pitmaster, Daniel launched Smoky Soul in 2013 to bring bold, soulful flavors to the city’s evolving barbecue scene. His signature dishes like Chicago-style rib tips, smoked jerk chicken, and Stock Yard brisket pay homage to the South Side’s meatpacking legacy while pushing BBQ into new territory. A former special education teacher, Daniel uses his background in mentorship to make a deeper impact. He’s the founder of the BBQ Legacy Academy, a free summer program that teaches teens the craft, culture, and career potential of barbecue. He also leads Smoke, Spice, and Everything Nice, a course dedicated to empowering women in the pit. Daniel is a Kingsford “Preserve the Pit” grant recipient, a Weber Grills ambassador, and a passionate BBQ historian focused on reclaiming Chicago’s rightful place in American barbecue culture. His work has been featured on WGN, FOX 32, WBEZ, and more. Through catering, live fire demos, and his Brisket & Barrels pop-up series with local breweries, Smoky Soul continues to build community—one plate at a time.
